Canada speeds up citizenship certificates for trans Americans with Canadian ancestry through fast-tracked application handling by IRCC.
Proof of Canadian citizenship certificates have become increasingly popular in the United States after changes to Canada’s citizenship law last December removed the generational limit on citizenship by descent.
The change made millions of Americans eligible for Canadian citizenship, including many trans Americans seeking additional security and mobility options.
As interest in Canadian citizenship has increased, standard application timelines for proof of citizenship certificates have grown from about five months to around ten months.
At the same time, several people identifying as trans Americans online have reported receiving urgent processing in as little as two weeks.
According to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), urgent processing may be available in situations involving possible hardship or harm connected to:
- Sexual orientation
- Gender identity or expression
- Membership in particular groups
Urgent processing may also be approved for applicants needing access to healthcare services in Canada.
How Urgent Processing Works?
To request urgent processing, applicants must submit a written explanation along with supporting documents.
The request must be included with the complete proof of citizenship application package.
Moreover, an IRCC officer reviews the request and decides whether the case qualifies for faster handling.
The department further notes that urgent handling may be approved, but no exact timeline is guaranteed.
Most Americans applying for proof of Canadian citizenship must submit paper applications.
Applicants also need to provide documents showing a direct family connection to a Canadian ancestor.
These documents may include:
- Birth certificates
- Marriage certificates
- Other official family records
Applying For A Canadian Passport
Once a person receives a proof of Canadian citizenship certificate, they can apply for a Canadian passport.
Canadian passport applications allow applicants to choose one of three gender markers:
- F (female)
- M (male)
- X (another gender)
Applicants can select the gender marker they want printed on the passport.
If the chosen gender marker is different from the one shown on previous documents, applicants must submit a gender identifier request form with the passport application.
