 What Is Category-Based Selection?

Category-based selection draws were introduced in May 2023 as a method for IRCC to target Express Entry applicants with highly in-demand human capital attributes like profession, language ability, etc.

The final categories for 2023 were chosen following consultations with IRCC stakeholders & partners. In early 2024, the department declared that it would keep the same categories throughout 2024. The categories are:

  • Healthcare
  • STEM Professions
  • Trades
  • Transport
  • Agriculture/ Agri-Food
  • Strong French Proficiency

Applicants in occupation-based categories required a minimum of six months of continuous full-time work experience in an eligible profession over the past three years.

Those who are eligible under the category for French proficiency must have French-language test results which show a minimum score of 7 in all four language abilities on the Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens.

What Is Express Entry?

IRCC issues 1400 ITAs in the latest Express Entry draw. Express Entry is responsible for managing three economic immigration programs, i.e., Federal Skilled Workers Programs, Federal Skilled Trades Program, & Canadian Experience Class.

Applicants who are eligible for one of these programs upload a profile to the IRCC website. They are further assigned scores based on human capital factors like age, language ability, work experience, education, profession, etc. These scores are taken together & used to assign a final CRS score.

Those with the highest scores are most likely to obtain an invitation to apply for permanent status in Canada. If an applicant is issued an ITA, they can then further submit the final application to IRCC, which aims to process the application within six months.
