Alberta updates worker EOI rules and refund policy, i.e., the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) has introduced new updates to its Worker Expression of Interest (WEOI) system. The changes took effect on May 26, 2026, and are expected to make the process easier for immigration candidates applying through Alberta’s worker streams.
Under the updated rules, candidates can now edit their WEOI submissions without cancelling their profiles. Before this change, applicants had to cancel their existing submission and create a new one every time they wanted to update information in their profile.
This often forced candidates to pay the WEOI submission fee more than once.
The Government of Alberta announced these updates through its official AAIP updates webpage and confirmed that the changes came into effect immediately.
Candidates Can Now Edit Their Profiles
The latest update allows candidates to make changes to their WEOI after submission while keeping the same profile active in the system.
Earlier, even small corrections or updates required applicants to cancel the existing submission and submit a completely new profile. This process created extra work and additional expenses for many candidates.
The province said the new approach is meant to reduce inconvenience and improve the overall experience for applicants.
Alberta has also confirmed another important change for candidates invited under certain worker streams.
Applicants who receive an invitation can now decline it and return to the WEOI pool before the 15-day invitation period ends. This gives candidates another opportunity to be considered under different streams or pathways they may qualify for.
Alberta Offering Refunds To Some Candidates
The province also announced limited refunds for candidates affected by the old rules.
The refund applies to individuals who:
- Created and submitted a WEOI between April 7 and May 26, 2026
- Paid the WEOI submission fee
- Cancelled their profile to make changes or corrections
The WEOI fee officially came into effect on April 7, 2026. Alberta said the refund policy is meant to help candidates who had to pay more than once before the new editing feature became available.
However, refunds will not be issued automatically.
Candidates must request the refund through the Opportunity Alberta contact form.
The Government of Alberta also explained that some applicants are not eligible for refunds. This includes:
- Candidates who cancelled their WEOI because of updates to their Express Entry profile; and
- Candidates who created a new WEOI during an active invitation period.
The province also clarified that editing a WEOI does not extend its validity period. Every WEOI remains valid for one year from the original submission date.
Recent Changes To Alberta’s WEOI System
The latest update follows several recent changes made by Alberta to its immigration system.
On April 7, 2026, Alberta introduced a mandatory $135 submission fee for candidates applying under several worker streams and pathways.
The fee applies to the following programs:
- Alberta Opportunity Stream
- Alberta Express Entry Stream (Accelerated Tech Pathway, Law Enforcement Pathway, and priority sector draws)
- Dedicated Health Care Pathways (Express Entry and non-Express Entry)
- Rural Renewal Stream
- Tourism and Hospitality Stream
Before that, Alberta introduced additional fields in the WEOI form on February 25, 2026.
These new sections asked candidates with Alberta job offers to provide details about wages and hours of work. The province stated that incomplete WEOIs missing this information would not be considered in future invitation rounds.
The current WEOI model itself was first introduced on September 30, 2024.
How Alberta’s WEOI System Works?
Foreign nationals interested in immigrating through Alberta’s worker pathways must first create and submit a WEOI through the AAIP online portal.
Candidates must provide information related to:
- Work experience
- Education
- Language skills
- Family connections in Alberta
- Other personal and employment details
Applicants are also required to pay the $135 submission fee.
Once submitted, profiles enter Alberta’s Worker Stream pool. The province then scores and ranks candidates using the AAIP points system.
The system awards up to 100 points based on factors connected to human capital and economic needs.
Alberta regularly conducts draws from this pool. Invitations are issued based on several factors, including:
- WEOI scores
- Labour market needs
- Provincial priorities
- Available nomination spaces
- Application volumes
After receiving an invitation, candidates can submit a complete provincial nomination application. This stage requires a separate $1,500 application fee.
Moreover, successful applicants receive a provincial nomination and can later apply to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for permanent residence.
Alberta Continues To Focus On Key Industries
The federal government gave Alberta 6,403 nomination spaces for 2026.
As of May 14, the province had already issued 2,191 nominations.
At the same time, Alberta reported that there were 40,161 WEOIs in the candidate pool across all worker pathways. Most of these profiles were submitted under the Alberta Opportunity Stream.
The AAIP also had 1,289 applications waiting for review and final decisions.
For 2026, Alberta said it will continue focusing on workers in priority sectors, including:
- Healthcare
- Technology
- Construction
- Manufacturing
- Aviation
- Agriculture
- Rural Renewal Stream communities
