How Permanent Residence Is Selected Through Express Entry?

Express Entry is the federal government’s main system for managing permanent residence applications from skilled workers who plan to settle outside Quebec.

To enter the Express Entry pool, candidates must first qualify under one of the immigration programs managed by the system. Once eligible, they receive a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score based on factors such as age, education, language ability, and work experience.

IRCC regularly invites the highest-ranking candidates to apply for permanent residence through Express Entry draws.

The department also holds category-based draws that focus on candidates who meet the requirements for specific priority groups.

At present, these priority categories include candidates with strong French-language skills and those with work experience in sectors facing labour shortages, including healthcare and social services, trades, education, and transportation.
